Running the ceiling from the shopfront downward to the back of the store mimics the enveloping nature of a traditional canopy. The surface is clad in three tones of red mirror planks, creating a dynamic interplay of reflections. By capturing and reflecting movement, the ceiling brings a sense of warmth and dynamism to the store, making every visit feel like an experience rather than just a transaction.
Thailand's vernacular architecture often has extensive canopies to protect people from the vast amount of rain and the heat from tropical sunlight. Often in a traditional Thai house compound, the space beneath attached roofs offers a cozy area with a unique character.
This Jim Thompson store is a 60 sq.m. boutique in a duty-free mall with a notably high ceiling. We explored the possibility of making the ceiling a focal point, fully utilizing the vertical volume.
