Welcome to Speck Hostel, where we’re transforming a five-story, 20-plus-year-old building into a modern and vibrant hostel. Nestled in the lively Sukhumvit Soi 33 area of Bangkok, this spot is known for its energetic vibe, packed with shops, bars, and a thriving expat community. Our building has quite a history of its own, having once housed a bookstore, a taekwondo school, and a café.

What really inspired us is the traditional Thai use of wrought iron windows, especially in roadside commercial buildings. These windows do more than just provide security—they add a unique charm. We’re excited to experiment with wrought iron in our design to give the building its own unique personality.

We’ve created a lace-patterned wrought iron façade that wraps around four stories of the building. This intricate design is paired with variously sized square windows, letting natural light stream into the guest rooms and the central staircase hall. The way light plays through the wrought iron adds a cool visual effect to the building’s exterior.

Our design also features a bold color scheme of white and blue. Blue leads guests into the main reception hall, which also doubles as a café. The reception area has a white terrazzo concrete counter, with a sharp line guiding you to a small back courtyard where natural light pours in. The double-height blue café connects visually to the white breakfast area on the mezzanine floor, creating a flow.

We’ve made sure to keep elements of the original building as well. The old staircase and floor markings have been preserved and integrated into the new design as ornamental touches that celebrate the building’s memory. These nods to the past add character and depth to the new hostel.

The blue and white reception space is designed to encourage guests to meet and share experiences. It’s not just functional—it’s a social hub where you can relax and connect with other travelers.

Since the old staircase wasn’t going to cut it for our new hostel, we redesigned it as a blue spiral carpet that connects all five floors. Along with a new elevator, this ensures smooth movement throughout the building. This blue staircase is a bit of a first for Supermachine Studio, where most of our staircases are traditionally red.
